While MSS is a unique build, Ventana have a lot of experience with large public facilities like the Langley Events Centre or the Terry Fox Library in Coquitlam. If you would like to see a real world secondary school example, Ventana constructed Handsworth Secondary in North Vancouver, which is similar to the new MSS.

All current services and courses will continue in the new building, but the new design will be more inclusive and supportive of all learners. The building is also designed with a potential expansion on the west side for a community childcare centre.

Archived items like photos, plaques, and the like will be transferred to the new building, although not all will be displayed. We will also have a closing ceremony for the old building.

The new building will have increased parking with multiple access points. The drop off location will be moved to 9th Avenue, and the bus loop will remain in its current location. 9th Avenue will be expanded and we are working with our colleagues in the City of Mission for considerations on things like traffic flow, lighting and other concerns.

All buildings in BC must follow provincial building codes. School buildings are also designed as points of refuge in an emergency. The new building will also be both more accessible and more energy efficient than the current building.

The initial groundbreaking will occur in early 2026. The building is then built in phases, so more trades can be on the site at a given time. Occupancy is scheduled for September of 2028, with demolition of the old building to follow, and then the new fields and parking constructed.

Public organizations like school districts have to follow comprehensive processes in getting funding approval, and then very strict guidelines on how to select a successful proponent, including considerations around things like conflict of interest, confidentiality, equity of information, and so on, that are enforced by the province to ensure a fair process. This adds transparency and piece of mind for the community, but it does add complication to the timeline.
