Frequently Asked Questions
What is happening?
The Mission Public Schools District (SD 75) is thinking about changing how schools are organized. Currently, students go through a middle school system (K–6, 7–9 and 10–12). However, the district is exploring a shift to a secondary school system (K–7 and 8–12).
Why is the school district exploring this change?
Previous surveys indicated an interest in returning to a K–7, 8–12 secondary school model. The district is committed to gaining a deeper insight into what families’ value in education which will guide the design of future programs and learning spaces that support student success as the community grows and changes.
What decisions can families and others influence?
Feedback from families, staff, and community members will help shape the district’s decision about what school model—middle or secondary school—best supports local students.
What aspects can’t families or others influence?
While community feedback is important, some decisions such as the budget, capital planning and project timelines are set by the Ministry of Education, Mission Public Schools Board of Education and school administration.
How will individual feedback be used?
Feedback from families, students, and staff will be carefully considered and will help guide the recommendation of the working group–whether it be to move to a 8-12 secondary school model or keep a middle school structure. Your input plays a key role in shaping decisions that affect students now and into the future.
When will I have an opportunity to provide feedback?
Parents and families will have the opportunity to provide feedback from January 26 until February 13.
How will decisions be made?
A working group with representation from educational leaders, student services, Indigenous education, and operations will review all input and develop recommendations.
Working group recommendations will be based on the following four criteria: addresses diverse student learning needs; supports more programming opportunities (academics and sports); supports staff connection to families and students; and supports a sense of belonging, identity and connection for all learners
